Before, During and After: Swivel Lounge Chair and Vintage Wrought Iron Vanity Chair

Before, During and After: Swivel Lounge Chair and Vintage Wrought Iron Vanity Chair

Project 1: High-Back Swivel Lounge Chair

A striking high-back swivel lounge chair, reminiscent of the Metropolitan armchair in its silhouette, came into the Torquay studio in need of a full reupholstery. The brief was bold: green boucle for the seat and back, with a contrasting orange tartan trim running along the edges and base.

The chair was stripped back, the frame assessed, and new padding applied before the fabrics were pinned, fitted and hand-stitched into place. The result is a piece that feels both mid-century in spirit and entirely contemporary in its colour story.

Materials Used

  • Green boucle fabric (seat and back)
  • Orange tartan wool (trim and base border)
  • New foam and wadding throughout

Project 2: Vintage Wrought Iron Vanity Chair

This delicate vintage wrought iron vanity chair arrived with a seat pad that had seen better days. The original horsehair and webbing were carefully removed using a hammer and chisel, revealing the original cork and timber base beneath.

The seat was rebuilt from scratch, with new materials layered up to restore the original profile. The wrought iron frame, with its elegant scrollwork, was cleaned and left in its original patina.

Before

Worn seat pad, original horsehair and webbing intact but degraded.

During

Seat stripped back to the timber and cork base. Frame assessed and cleaned.

After

Fully rebuilt seat pad, ready for new fabric. A piece of genuine vintage craft, restored to last another generation.
